Agentic systems

Agentic systems are AI applications that plan, decide, and act on a user's behalf — invoking tools, browsing the web, and writing back results — rather than simply answering a single prompt.

Agentic systems extend the chat-bot pattern with autonomy: they break a goal into steps, choose tools (search, code, APIs, browsers), execute those steps, and revise their plan based on results. ChatGPT with browsing and tools, Claude with computer use, Perplexity's research mode, and a wide range of vertical agents (sales, support, ops) are all examples.

For SEO, agentic systems matter because they are increasingly the front door to the web. When an agent researches a topic, the sites it can read, parse, and cite are the sites that influence the answer. Agentic SEO is the practice of being one of those sites.
