Best AEO tools (2026): a buyer's guide by job to be done
Last updated:
Short answer
AEO tools split into three shapes: monitoring platforms that track how answer engines cite your brand, graders that score a URL once, and execution layers that generate and publish the fixes. Pick by which job is actually your bottleneck — measurement or implementation.
The capability table
Every row is a vendor; every column is a capability that changes what your team has to do by hand. Assessments reflect each vendor's publicly documented capabilities and are kept deliberately coarse — a dash means partial or plan-dependent.
| Product | Shape | Citation tracking | Publishes fixes | Crawler audit | Generates schema / llms.txt | Multi-client | White-label reports | API / MCP |

Five questions to ask every vendor
1. Does it audit crawler access by user agent?
If robots.txt blocks GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot, no amount of content work registers. This is the most common hard blocker on a real site and the cheapest to fix, so it belongs in the first screen — not a footnote.
2. Does it track citations on your prompts, not generic ones?
A prompt set that isn't grounded in your actual pages and your actual named competitors produces a number you can't act on. Ask whether prompts are generated from a crawl of your site and whether you can see which competitor got named when you didn't.
3. Does it publish the fix, or only describe it?
This is the question that separates the category. Reports are cheap; JSON-LD, forty rewritten meta descriptions, llms.txt, and FAQ passages pushed into a CMS are not. If the vendor stops at findings, budget for the person who implements them.
4. Does it scope data per client, and can reports carry your brand?
Agency-specific, and non-negotiable: workspaces enforced server-side so one client's data can never appear in another's report, plus white-label exports. Ask for a sample export rather than a settings screenshot.
5. Is there an API or MCP server?
Click-through UI does not scale past a handful of properties. Headless access is what makes a twenty-client roster viable for one strategist, and what lets AEO work run inside an existing pipeline.
Bottom line
If you have content and dev capacity and need measurement, buy monitoring. If the reports you already have aren't turning into shipped changes, buy an execution layer. AgenticSEO is built for the second case: it tracks citations across covered answer engines, then writes and publishes the JSON-LD, llms.txt, metadata, and FAQ passages that close each gap — to WordPress, Webflow, HubSpot, or a Git repo, behind an approval gate.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best AEO tools in 2026?
It depends on your bottleneck. For enterprise-grade measurement, monitoring platforms such as Profound and Peec AI lead. For a fast free score, HubSpot's AEO grader. For teams that need the schema, llms.txt, metadata, and FAQ passages actually written and published, an execution layer such as AgenticSEO. Score every vendor on crawler-access auditing, grounded prompt tracking, whether it publishes fixes, client scoping, and API access.
What is the difference between AEO tools and GEO tools?
None in practice. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) describe the same work: getting retrieved and cited by AI assistants rather than only ranking on classical search. Vendors use the terms interchangeably.
Is there a free AEO tool?
Yes. HubSpot's AEO grader scores a URL for free, and AgenticSEO's free check audits three pages and returns downloadable output — an FAQ block, a schema snippet, a page draft, and a 30-day calendar — with no card and no sign-up.
Do you need an AEO tool if you already use Semrush or Ahrefs?
Classical suites give you demand, difficulty, and backlink data, which still matter because assistants largely retrieve from search indexes. What they don't give you is per-prompt citation tracking against named competitors, crawler-access auditing for assistant user agents, or llms.txt and answer-passage generation. Most teams keep the suite and add an AEO layer.
How do you measure whether AEO is working?
Track the share of your buyer prompts on which an assistant cites your brand, measured per engine on a fixed schedule, and pair every movement with the underlying prompt win rate. Impressions and rankings are lagging proxies; citation share is the direct measure.
