Answer
What belongs on an answer engine optimization checklist?
Short answer
A working AEO checklist runs in dependency order: allow assistant crawlers, serve real HTML without JavaScript, lead every page with a self-contained answer passage, publish valid entity JSON-LD, ship an llms.txt, earn third-party corroboration, then track a fixed prompt set with named competitors and re-measure after each change. Items later in that order do nothing while an earlier one fails.
The checklist, in the order that works
Order matters more than completeness. Schema on a page a crawler is blocked from is wasted effort, so work top to bottom and don't skip ahead.
- Allow assistant crawlers in robots.txt and at the CDN: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot.
- Confirm each important URL returns real body HTML without JavaScript — fetch it and read the raw response.
- Lead every page with a direct answer to the question it targets, in 40 to 60 self-contained words.
- Phrase headings as the questions buyers actually type, then answer immediately beneath each one.
- Publish Organization and Product JSON-LD sitewide, plus Article on editorial pages, in the served HTML.
- Add FAQPage markup only where visible Q&A genuinely exists on the page.
- Ship an llms.txt at the site root listing what you cover and the pages that matter.
- Keep one canonical page per intent; fold near-duplicates together rather than competing with yourself.
- State ownership, pricing, and who wrote the page — assistants discount claims they can't attribute.
- Earn third-party corroboration: directories, review sites, comparison articles that repeat your key claims.
- Track a fixed set of buyer prompts against ChatGPT and Gemini with competitors named, and record citation rate.
- Re-measure the identical prompt set after each publish, so every change is proved by a delta rather than argued about.
The three items teams skip
Items 1, 2, and 12 are the ones that get skipped, and they are the ones that decide outcomes.
Crawler access gets skipped because nobody owns robots.txt. Server-rendered HTML gets skipped because the page looks fine in a browser. Re-measurement gets skipped because it is boring — and without it you never learn which of your twenty changes moved anything.
Running the checklist without doing it by hand
Every item above is mechanical, which is why it should be automated. AgenticSEO crawls the site and grades items 1 through 9 per page, drafts the metadata, JSON-LD, llms.txt, and FAQ answers the failures need, publishes the approved ones to WordPress, Webflow, HubSpot, or Git, and runs items 11 and 12 on a schedule.
You can start with the free three-page check — no sign-up, no card — and see how much of the checklist your site already passes.
Real output
The checklist as a machine-readable audit result
The same twelve items as the app reports them, plus the two artifacts a typical failure produces.
1 crawler access .............. PASS 2 server-rendered HTML ........ PASS (97/97 routes) 3 lead answer passage ......... FAIL (14 pages) 4 question-shaped headings .... WARN (6 pages) 5 Organization + Product LD ... PASS 6 FAQPage where applicable .... FAIL (9 pages) 7 llms.txt .................... PASS 8 one canonical per intent .... WARN (2 overlaps) 9 attribution + pricing ....... PASS 10 third-party corroboration ... MANUAL 11 tracked prompt set .......... PASS (50 prompts, 2 engines) 12 re-measure on schedule ...... PASS (weekly)
Ordered by dependency, so the top-most FAIL is always the next thing to fix.
<h1>What is answer engine optimization?</h1> <p>Answer engine optimization is the practice of making a site retrievable and quotable by AI assistants, so that answers to buyer questions cite you as a source. It replaces rank position with citation rate as the metric that matters.</p>

What is on an answer engine optimization checklist?
Twelve items in dependency order: allow assistant crawlers, serve real HTML without JavaScript, lead with a direct answer passage, use question-shaped headings, publish Organization and Product JSON-LD, add FAQPage where visible Q&A exists, ship an llms.txt, keep one canonical page per intent, state authorship and pricing, earn third-party corroboration, track a buyer prompt set, and re-measure after every change.
What is the first thing to fix for AEO?
Crawler access. If GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot is disallowed in robots.txt or blocked at the CDN, no other change can be retrieved. It is the most common blocker and usually inherited from a template or security plugin by accident.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It is a distinct layer on the same foundation. Classical SEO earns indexing and authority; AEO makes the indexed page quotable by an assistant through extractable passages, entity markup in the served HTML, and llms.txt. Sites that skip the AEO layer stay invisible in assistant answers despite ranking well.
How do you know whether AEO work is paying off?
Re-run an identical set of buyer prompts against the same assistants after each publish and compare citation rate and per-competitor share of AI voice. A prompt that flips from a competitor's name to yours is the unit of progress; traffic follows later and is noisier.
